Ornamental Cherries are one of the popular flowering trees for the small garden. They come in a lot variety of shapes and sizes, and include several quite small trees. They are easy to grow, hardy, disease resistant, generally pest free and need just a little pruning. Some also attract butterflies to the garden, providing food for the caterpillars or nectar for the adult butterflies.

These are the most popular varieties of Ornamental Cherries:

Prunus Kanzan
Big bold double pink flowers in late April. The foliage is a lovely copper tint when young. Unpruned height up to 8 metres and spread to 6 metres.

Prunus Shirotae
Single or semi-double white flowers in late April, and coppery young foliage. Size as for Kanzan.

Prunus Sargentii
Big clusters of clear pink flower in late March. Notable for its bright autumn leaf colour, the bronze red young leaves turning orange and crimson in early autumn. Size as for Kanzan.

Prunus Serrula
Fairly unspectacular white flowers in April. Grow this instead for its splendid, shining, bright red-brown peeling bark. Size as for Kanzan.

Prunus Amanagowa
Abundant soft pink flowers in April and May. This is a particularly good tree for a small space, with a columnar shape like a small Lombardy Poplar or Cypress, up to 8 metres tall but no more than 2 – 2 ½ metres in spread.

Prunus Kiku shidare or Cheal’s Weeping Cherry
Deep pink double flowers crowd the arching, trailing branches in March and April. Rarely more than 4 meters high, most specimens can be kept much smaller by pruning if space is restricted.

Prunus Virginiana Schubert
Pendulous spikes of white flower in spring, with glossy red mature leaves. Height 3 metres spread 2 ½ metres.

Prunus Ukon
Abundant semi-double white flowers and attractive red and purple autumn leaves. Height 6 metres spread 3 metres.

Prunus x cistena
Actually a flowering plum, but included here because its deep pink cherry-like flowers and bronze leaves are so lovely, and also because it’s so small at 1 ½ metres height and spread that you can easily grow it in a pot on a patio. It also makes a beautiful hedging plant.

B. Planting media

If planted in the garden, the required soil is sandy loam, fertile, friable, contain many organic substances, a good management of water and air.

The ideal degree of soil acidity (pH) for strawberry cultivation in the garden is 5.4-7.0, while in the pot is 6.5-7,0.

If planted in the garden, the depth of ground water needs is about 50-100 cm from the ground surface. If planted in a pot, the media should have the character of axis, easy to absorb water and burly elements should always available.

C. Planting techniques

Spray the polybag which contains the seeds and pullout the seeds with its planting media carefully.

Plant one seed in a hole, then tamp the soil around the base of the stem.

For plantation without mulsa, give the basic fertilizer as much as 1/3 of recommended fertilizer dose (suggested doses is 200 kg/ha Urea, 250 kg SP-36 and 150 kg/ha KCl). Fertilizer given in the hole in the depth of 15 cm in the left and right side of the plants.

Spray the soil around the base of the stem until moist.

D. Fertilization

Plantation without mulsa: additional fertilizer given 1,5-2 months after planting as much as 2/3 of the recommended dose. Fertilization do by spraying in shallow area between rows, and then close the soil.

Plantation with mulsa: additional fertilizer added if the growth is not good enough. Mixture of urea, SP-36 and KCl (1:2:1,5) as much as 5 kg dissolved in 200 liters of water. Each plant sprayed with 350-500 cc of fertilizer.

Fruit is delicious and necessary for our health. It’s delicious because babies and adults like fruit. Necessary because the fruit contains vitamins and minerals that are needed by the human body even according to the last research fruits are very useful to prevent various diseases, such as cancer and stroke. Some specific types of vegetables can also be made as Juice, which is as delicious as fruits.

The problem faced is how to popularize daily consumption of fruit / vegetables in the household. We see in daily life how soft drinks become favorite beverage of our young generation and seems to be a part of today lifestyle. Perhaps this is because the excessive campaign of soft drink, even if we review in terms of nutrition, soft drink is no more than useless drink. Drink the soft drink does not get more than just additional energy. In fact, when soft drink can be replaced with juice of fruit and fresh vegetables, we will get a double benefit, both for the health and the agriculture’s benefit.

To popularize the replacement of soft drink with juice of fruit and fresh vegetables, if is necessary to provide Juicer and blender in the household. These tools are very easy to obtain in the shops. Besides, people should be given counseling about the benefits of fruits and vegetables and how to choose a good fruit and vegetables available in the market to be made as juice. Security aspects of fruits from bacterial contamination and chemicals (pesticides) also need to be published.

Mango is mainly planted for its fruit. Ripe fruit commonly eaten in the fresh condition, or a mixture of ice, in the form of slices or blended. The young fruit usually eat with sambal (we call it “rujak”), or sold on the roadside after the peeled, sliced and equipped with chili seasoning salt. Mango fruit is also processed as candy, dried fruit slices, canned and others. In various regions in Indonesia, mango (young or old) with sour taste are often used as a mixture of sambal or cooking of meat and fish.

Mango’s seeds can be used as cattle feed or poultry; in India has even used as food in the famine. The young leaves used as vegetable or “lalapan”. Mango’s wood is quite strong, hard and easily done, but less durable for outdoor use. This timber can also used a good charcoal.

Mango mainly produced by countries like India, Mexico, Brazil, Pakistan, Thailand, China, Indonesia, the Philippines, and Bangladesh. Total world production in the 80′s about 15 million tons, but only about 90,000 tons (1985) sold in the world. It means, most of the mango is consumed locally.

How to make mango trees bear fruit quickly …?

Buy the implant ones that will most quickly get the fruit because has the nature of the mother, so similar to the cloning but made as the miniature. Remove the mango tree sap as much as possible by creating a sketches in the trunk so the resin will come out much. Guaranteed it will produce much fruit. Remember, mango is seasonal fruit, so make a sketch in the mango season.

About 2cm of high from the soil, main stem drilled with a diameter as large as a pencil. Remember, this drill is until it emerge, and then filled with wood or wood pencil.
Principally it is the same way to make sketch up before, but more efficient, because the fluid will exit from the pressure of the root which is more than the sketch. This stimulated the flower.

Alternatively, tree was nailed up. Insert a nail and leave there.
Instead of wounded the stem, you can also fertilized with NPK once a month (the fertilizer immersed in the ground with about 20 cm distance from the main stem, with a depth of about 10 cm) and flushed by the water to make it absorbed quicker by the plant. You can also sprayed some leaf fertilizer once every 2 weeks (spray at 7 am or 4 pm) especially at the bottom of the leaf because the location of stomata is in the bottom surface.
