Flower colors symbolize Yin or Yang energies. Plants and coherent position-matching colors in the garden, will bring good luck and peace for the occupants of the house.

As is known, feng (wind) shui (water) is an expression of the elements of strength that flows from the natural environment (cosmic). But the cosmic force (qi) are not only invisible flow of energy from wind and water, but also the energy of the Earth. In other words feng shui is the art of living in harmony with nature, in order to benefit from the cosmic power to create peace, and prosperity.

Applying feng shui principles when designing, building and managing a house, have done by a lot of people. But using the same principle in the plant layout and colors match the flowers in the garden may be just a little one knows.

To get a profitable flow of energy within the garden, the element of Yin and Yang must be balanced. Well, a flower or leaf color, ornament, in the garden can help stimulate the natural energy flow and enhance the creation of harmony.

The balance of Yin – Yang

Yang energy (the active masculine / positive) symbolized the sun and bright colors like red, orange, and yellow. Yin energy (passive feminine / negative) is symbolized the moon and soft colors such as violet, blue, and green. Front gardens (public areas) symbolizes Yang energy. While the rear garden (private area), the symbol of Yin energy.

Well, what kind of flowers’ colors should be selected? Because the front garden represents Yang energy, should be planted with flowers and bright flashy colors such as orange, red, and yellow. Those colors can absorb the positive energy into the house. Especially the flowers like this takes the heat. Suitable planted in front of the house with a lot of sunlight.

So, what fits in the back garden? To create peace in the back garden as a place of relaxation or contemplation, choose the Yin flower colors such as blue, the soothing purple, or silver-leaved plants or gray. Keep the flower color variants remain simple. If too much color variety, it would disrupt the balance of energy flow.

Having a beautiful garden and contains a variety of plants must be very amusing. One of the challenging part is when it’s time to choose the type of plants that will be planted in the beloved garden. We certainly want a beautiful plant and has a long life cycle. Perennial plants is a solution you should consider.

Perennials are considered to be ornamental plants that do not die after one season of growth. They are keep growing in size and stature until they reach their full maturity. Some plants are short-lived, but old favorites can thrive for decades. The picture above is Hosta ‘High Society’. The yellow centers grow larger and turn to white as the summer progresses. Plants are small growing to only about 8 inches tall and 15 inches wide making them perfect for tucking in between other Hostas.

Healthy perennial plants are essential to maintaining a desirable aesthetic appearance. Therefore you need to know the symptoms of diseased plants, such as leaf spot, yellowing, malformations, etc. To control any of these problems, you need to know the cause.

To make sure that your prized roses remain in the best of health, simply follow these tips.

1. Black Spots on Leaves

This disease is commonly known as black spot. Black spots appear as circular with fringed edges on leaves. They cause the leaves to yellow. Remove the infected foliage and pick up any fallen leaves around the rose. Artificial sprays may be used to prevent or treat this kind of rose disease.

2. Stunted or malformed young canes

Known as powdery mildew, this is a fungal disease that covers leaves, stems and buds with wind spread white powder. It makes the leaves curl and turn purple. Spray with Funginex or Benomyl to treat this fungal disease.

3. Blistered underside of leaves

Known as rust, this disease is characterized by orange-red blisters that turn black in fall. It can survive the winter and will then attack new sprouts in the spring. Collect and discard leaves that are infected in fall. a Benomyl or Funginex spray every 7-10 days may help.

4. Malformed or stunted leaves and flowers

This is caused by spider mites. They are tiny yellow, red or green spiders found on the underside of leaves where they suck juices. The application of Orthene or Isotox may help in treating this infestation.

5. Weak and mottled leaves with tiny white webs under them

This is caused by aphids. They are small soft-bodied insects that usually brown, green or red. Often clustered under leaves and flower buds, they suck plant juices from tender buds. Malathion or diazinon spray may help roses to survive these bugs.

6. Flowers that don’t open or are deformed when they open.

Thrips could be the reason behind this problem. They are slender, brown-yellow bugs with fringed wings that also suck juices from flower buds. Cut and discard the infested flowers. Orthene and malathion may also treat this problem.

Remember that roses are hungry feeders that require much fertilizer to become healthy bushes.

Roses have had meaning since the dawn of time. Everyone knows that a red rose is a symbol for love but did you know that when you give a bouquet of white and red roses, it means unity? Read on to learn what your favorite roses mean in the very special language of flowers.

In Victorian times, suitors would present a bouquet to their intended that held much meaning once the flowers were looked at. These bouquets were called “tussie-mussies” and every courtship began with their presentation. The content of these tokens often changed as the relationship did until the bride walked down the aisle with the most meaningful bouquet.

Red roses say “I love you” and also stand for respect and courage. Rosebuds symbolize beauty, youth and a heart innocent of love or: “You are young and beautiful.” Red rosebuds mean “pure and lovely” and white rosebuds signify girlhood or “too young to love.” The moss rosebud stands for confessions of love. A single rose stands for simplicity. In full bloom, it means “I love you” or “I love you still,” and a bouquet of roses in full bloom signifies gratitude.

White roses have several meanings: “You’re heavenly,” reverence and humility, innocence and purity, “I’m worthy of you,” and secrecy and silence. Red and white roses together, or white roses with red edges, signify unity. Pink roses in general symbolize grace and gentility. For more subtle shades of meaning, choose deep pink to stand for gratitude and appreciation. Light pink conveys admiration and sympathy.

Yellow roses usually stand for joy and gladness, but can also say “try to care.” Red and yellow blends stand for jovial and happy feelings. Coral or orange roses denote enthusiasm and desire.

A deep burgundy rose means “unconscious beauty.” while pale colors convey sociability and friendship. Hybrid tea roses mean “I’ll remember you always” and sweetheart roses symbolize just what their name implies.

Two roses taped or wired together to form a single stem signal an engagement or coming marriage. A full-blown rose place over two buds forms a combination that signifies secrecy. Withered white roses have two meanings: fleeting beauty and “you made no impression.” A crown made of roses signifies reward or virtue. Rose leaves are a symbol of hope.

If you’re shopping at a garden center, shop early in the season and choose only bulbs that are firm and free of defects such as cuts, bruises, or mold.
You will need these tools:
# High-quality tulip bulbs (in mild-winter areas, chill for six to eight weeks)
# Trowel or bulb-planting tool
# Shovel
# Bulb fertilizer
# Mulch

The rule is to plant tulips pointed end up and 6 inches deep, meaning 4 inches of soil above the top of the bulb. Plant a little deeper, to 8 inches, if soil is light or sandy, or if pests such as voles are a problem. Those 2 extra inches put them just out of reach of voles. Deep planting also keeps the bulbs cooler, an advantage in mild-winter areas.

For an attractive flower display, plant five tulips per square foot, or 250 bulbs per 50 square feet. Space individual bulbs about 5 inches apart. Use a low-nitrogen granular fertilizer specially formulated for bulbs, and follow label directions about the amount to apply.

When planting a grouping, take the extra care to plant at exactly the same depth; this ensures that they all will bloom at the same time. With a shovel, excavate soil to create a level planting base. Set bulbs into the bed, fertilize, and then cover with excavated soil.

Lily bulbs may be planted in spring or in the fall, usually from mid-September through mid-October. If you find hardy lilies growing in containers, you may add them to your garden throughout the growing season. When buying locally, select firm, plump bulbs with roots attached. Plant them as soon as possible. Bulbs never go completely dormant so they must not dry out before planting. Plant mail order bulbs as soon as possible, also.

Asiatic and Oriental lilies grow best in full sunlight. In Minnesota, they need six to eight hours of direct sunlight in order to perform well. They’ll grow taller, more spindly, and floppier in reduced light. Martagon hybrids, a group of turk’s-cap lilies, are prized for their ability to bloom well in shadier conditions.

For best effect, plant lilies in groups of three or five identical bulbs. Space them eight to twelve inches apart, keeping groups three to five feet apart, depending on the vigor and size of the lilies. Plant small lily bulbs two to four inches deep and large bulbs four to six inches deep, measuring from the top of the bulb. Divide and replant large clusters of bulbs every three years or so – or when it seems they are not blooming as well as originally.

Never plant lilies where standing water collects after heavy rainfall. Well-drained soil is an absolute must. Add lots of organic matter to clay soil to create a raised area with improved drainage. Incorporate organic matter into light, sandy soil also, to help hold onto nutrients and prevent it from drying too rapidly.

Before winter, mulch over newly planted bulbs with four to six inches of loose, weed-free compost, leaves, or wood chips. This delays soil freezing and allows roots to continue growing longer. Mulch also insulates the soil against fluctuating temperatures, delaying the emergence of frost-tender shoots in spring.

Hardy established lily bulbs don’t need winter protection where good snow cover is dependable. Considering Minnesota’s weather history, however, it’s always safest to apply a winter mulch. Wait until some time in November when the ground begins to freeze, before spreading it.
